Typical System Architecture
The typical architecture of automation within a Fab (Semiconductor
Fabrication Plant) is to have several vertically integrated layers
of software.
Communication between the bottom layer and the integration layer
is via an industry specific communication standard called SECS
(Semiconductor Equipment Communication Standard). This standard
has been refined over the years; the first major refinement being
the development of the GEM (General Equipment Model) and then
more recently with 300mm specific additions to SECS. The SECS
standard has also evolved from communication over serial lines
(RS232) to communication over IP networks.
